Machinima

Virtual worlds are quickly developing beyond an emerging technology to a mainstream reality.  Club Penguin, Webkins and Whyville are just a few of the popular sites populated by young students, and more virtual worlds are popping-up every month.  Educators are beginning to explore the educational application of these environments.  The Elisabeth Morrow School is curently using two virtual environments, Quest Atlantis with 4th-7th graders and Teen Second Life (private estate) with 8th gaders.

Josh explains virtual worlds in this machinima he created.

Machinima is video created using 3D virtual worlds.  It holds promise in the classroom because it provides a new tool for constructing video content and teaching media literacy skills.

Could machinima be the future of multimedia in the classroom?

Marianne Malmsrom created this machinima to explain the value of machinima in the classroom.

Students from the Elisabeth Morrow Tech Club collaborate with students from Suffern Middle School Tech Club to create this video keynoted for Don Tapscott's NetGeneration Education Project.  The film was awarded a Grand Prize of $1000 as well as a private webinar between Don Tapscott and all prize winners..

When kids at the Suffern Middle School were asked to talk about education and their future, they gave Peggy Sheehy, the SMS media specialist, an earful.

Listen and learn the bits of wisdom that can be gleaned from the students, if we only dare to ask them.

Students from The Elisabeth Morrow School Tech Club contributed machinima created in Quest Atlantis.

Marianne Malmstrom (aka Knowclue) worked remotely with the students of Suffern to create machinima of their avatars on Teen Second Life.

Original music, "Harpsicord" was created by a former Suffern Middle School student, Larry Bordowitz.

All editing was done by educators Peggy Sheehy, Suffern Middle School and Marianne Malmstrom, The Elisabeth Morrow School.
